Golfing in Nebraska in January

January 2015

There are three (3) things that are rarely mentioned in the same conversation: January, great golf weather and Nebraska!! We have had a great run of 60+ golf weather from Sat Jan 24th through Wed Jan 28th. An opportunity to punch out more courses on my bucket list. But first things first. I began the New Year as I ended the old year, playing golf with my old Cooks buddies Jack Henning and John Welch at my home course, Holmes on Jan 24th. There are 5 courses within 1 mile of my house, but Holmes is my favorite.

Monday I set out on I-80 west for Sutton, Henderson and Waco hoping for check-in boxes and envelopes outside of the clubhouse. Galaway Creek at Henderson was the only one that was open and had a place to pay green fees and get a score card.

As you can see they had put down a light coat of sand on greens for the winter. They putted fairly well on this short par 34 course and was an easy walk.

For Wednesday's menu, I did make contact with a live person at David City and North Bend so I headed out on I-80 west again for David City via Hwy 15. When I got there I found two vehicles in the parking lot, but no one around, so I set out on the course. My biggest surprise was at the first when my approach shot was hit a bit fat heading for the water hazard but I forgot that it was January for a moment while the ball bounced off of the water (ice) onto the collar of the green. A short course made up of 7 par 4's and two 3's. The 7th hole was intriguing as the regular tee box is on a peninsula on the city lake, but it was closed. After I finished I found the manager working on a remodel project in the basement of the clubhouse. Paid my fees, got a scorecard and packed up to head out to North Bend.

I had listened to a recorded message from the Schuyler Golf Club earlier that they were open from 11-2 and after 5pm. The timing did not fit my schedule so I blew on by the course to return in the spring on a trip to Columbus. When I arrived at the North Bend Golf course, not only was there staff at the club house but several cars in the lot. They had a January special of $15 for 18 holes and a cart! The course was in great shape for winter and is well worth the trip back when all is green. The greens were receptive and putted very true as I missed a lot of greens but chipped well and had only 25 putts with 8 one-putts on the back. I talked to the course manager about my bucket list and gave him my card with my blog address and he told me that they had a member who has only 6 courses left in Nebraska. Later when I finished he said that he saw the guy and gave him my card. Hopefully I will hear from him.
