A beautiful Day on Arnolds Course in Nebraska City

06/06/2016

Arbor Links takes advantage of the natural features of the site. Native grasses have been used to define and separate the golf holes, which is set on the existing terrain with as little land form disturbance as possible. Bunkers and other hazards have been sculpted to create an old world look and feel. Greens and fairways are expansive, providing unequaled challenges and stimulated creative strategy, while remaining simple and natural.
The course was built on wooded hills and old cornfields northwest of Arbor Day Farm. Each of Arbor Link's 18 holes is named for trees around that hole.  The South Table Creek and ravine meanders through the course and makes some beautiful elevated greens.

Playing the Hwy 2 Cowboy Trail

05/30/2016

Thanks to the weatherman who changed the forecast for the western part of the state, I headed out to Hyannis to play back to Callaway.  As I drove closer to Mullen the skies cleared up so I pulled into the Mullen Golf Club west of town.

Mullen Golf Club is a very well manicured gentle rolling course with medium sized greens with some undulations and no hazards.  Clusters of pine trees are scattered throughout the course. It is a very easy walk.

Next Stop: Hyannis

Hyannis is the smallest community in Nebraska that has a golf course.  The town of less than 200 put together a volunteer crew that designed, built and maintain the course. The greens are medium to large and undulated.  New wells have been put down to enhance the fairways and rough areas. Annually in September, a funded raiser combining golf, calf roping and trap shooting to benefit the course.

I stayed the night in Hyannis.

Next Stop: Thedford

05/31/2016

All of the course that I played on this trip are what I call mailbox courses except for Overton near Lexington. A mailbox course have a box where you put your money in an envelope and grab a scorecard and play. Many of these course also use volunteers to run and maintain their course.

Thedford is a very short course with small flat greens but has many large cottonwood trees throughout the course. The par 4 ninth is a 400 yard dogleg that is lined down the right and behind the green with cottonwoods. You must play a drive down the left side long enough to give a clear shot at the green. .

 Next Stop: Stapleton

Augusta Wind is built around and over a large hill. Two ravines wander through 5 of the holes and a pond comes into play on the 7th hole. The green are medium in size with slight breaks and brom grass rough on most of the holes.

Next Stop: Arnold

Arnold Golf Course is a gentle sloping course that crosses a small creek on four of the holes, Small flat greens with some of them crowned along with well manicured fairways makes it an easy walk and fun to play.

After I left Arnold for Calaway I found out that the Calaway sand course had closed two years ago so onto Overton.

Overton Golf Club is a flat course located just west of Overton on Hwy 30.  It is well manicured with medium sized greens and lots of cedar and pines. A small stream comes into play on 8 of the holes. Slight undulations affect putts on most of the greens. A course with playing again.
