Western Lake Country

07/12/2016

The weather out west appears to be breaking into the 80's for the week, so another western trip is in order. Ogallala and North Platte are in the plans.

Bayside Golf Club is located on the southwest side of Lake McConaughy. The back nine was added in 2001 and is very difficult with several canyons, draws and hills which demands several layups to large elevated greens. The back nine plays 3500 yards from the tips with very difficult par 5's of 652 and 618. The views of the Big Mac area are magnificent. Well worth the visit!

Next Stop: West Wind south of Ogallala

Located just south of I-80 east of town, West Wind was built as a 9 hole course in 1960 cut out of a cottonwood forest with small flat greens and three very reachable par 5's.  In contrast, the back nine was opened in 1997 on an open tract of land with rolling fairways with plenty of moguls and large elevated greens. A very enjoyable walk.

Next Stop: Oregon Trail Golf Course near Sutherland Reservoir

Just west of Ogallala is Sutherland and the Oregon Trail Golf Course located on the hillside next to the Sutherland Reservoir which also includes a campground.  The hillside was part of O'Fallons Bluff upon which the Oregon Trail once laid. The course has rolling fairways with scattered pine trees and medium sized elevated greens with slight undulations.

Next Stop: Lake Maloney at North Platte

Since I was ahead of schedule, I decided to play one of the three courses in North Platte before retiring for the night and watching the MLB All-Star Game and root on the Royals players.

Lake Maloney Golf Club located south of the town near Lake Maloney, was an eighteen hole sand green course until the early 90's when members rebuilt and converted to grass greens. The rolling terrain with mostly tree lined fairways and many bunkers with large undulated greens offers six sets of tees with the tips playing at 7005 yards. The Nebraska High School Assn has used this course several times recently for state golf tournaments.

Next Stop: Dinner in North Platte and some rest

07/13/2016

Since I was ahead of schedule on this trip, after finishing Iron Eagle and Indian Meadows in North Platte I decided to travel south to Curtis and play Arrowhead Meadows and then onto Hastings Lochland before heading back to Lincoln. Playing Curtis now will shorten my southwest corner trip on the back end later.

Iron Eagle is located on the east side of North Platte along the South Platte River. The front nine plays through a cottonwood forest and a few holes are next to the river.  Over the years a few of the front nine holes have been flooded as is the case currently so they have closed that nine for repairs. The back is newer and wide open with wide flat fairways and large flat greens that invites short iron approaches. I will come back to play the front nine when it is ready.

Next Stop: Indian Meadows

Indian Meadows Golf Course is located in the southwest part of North Platte just south of I80. A traditional tree lined fairways and medium sized greens with slight undulations with a creek coming into play on three holes.  Back to back par 5's on the 8th and 9th holes are claimed to be the only ones in the state. A pleasant walk and a fun course to play.

Next Stop: Curtis

Arrowhead Meadows is a traditional tree lined course with large cottonwoods and ash trees and has a creek that comes into play on 4 holes. The par 5 third hole plays 600 yards. The fairways are wide and straight with the 9th being the only dogleg. The par 5 fifth hole plays from an elevated tee some 30 yards above the fairway. The finishing hole requires an accurate tee shot to set up an open shot at the green. A fairly pleasant walk with the only climb being from the 3rd green to the 4th tee.

 Next Stop: Lochland at Hastings

Lochland CC is an exceptionally well maintained course with large flat greens, many bunkers and thick course rough. Most fairway lies are flat and the greens putt very true. Multiple tees give all levels of players a course to enjoy. All of the par 5's are well over 500 yards as the tips play over 7000 yards. Well worth the visit!

Next trip: Kimball to Chappell and Oshkosh to Grant to Benkelman to Trenton and Hayes Center
