Omaha gets number 100!

04/23/15

A gentle breeze and a nice temperatures sent me on the road again to Omaha.  Spring Lake Golf course is located in south Omaha near Spring Lake road and south 13th street. It is one of the oldest golf course in Omaha built in 1933 on the site  of an old dairy farm. It is well maintained and is great condition. Although it is short, I found out that on 3 of the greens that above the hole is an automatic three putt!  Being quite hilly, the uphill holes have small table top greens and the finishing hole is an uphill par 3 over a public street. Well worth a visit!

Off to my car and heading to LaVista Falls in LaVista. On a side note I finally got my car signs!

LaVista Falls is an executive course at 4080 yards that is built in a bowl shaped area. Water comes into play on most of the holes and green side bunkers on 7 holes. I was glad I got this course done as I read on line after getting home that their mayor is preparing the public for a conversion of the course to a regional park. The guy I was playing with also mentioned that to me.

Fremont Area

04/14/2015

Another perfect day in early April! Headed out to Hooper and arrived about 11am. The course is flat but has large cottonwoods throughout and water comes into play on the 1st ,2nd and 5th holes. Nice large undulated greens can leave long putts if you do not hit the correct shots. The par 3's have some length.

I had called the Fremont Country Club earlier and was told that non-members have to play with a member and I do not know any members there.

I headed south back through Fremont to Whitetail Run on the south side of the Platte river. It must have been my lucking day. After seeing the hills and elevation changes, I was elated when they had a special for cart and green fees. Could not pass that up! The course has generous fairways and nice sized greens, but the real test was the par 3's that average 188 yds (3) and the par 4's average 285 but some require layups because of the trees and hills.Did not see any deer but plenty of turkeys sounding off in the woods.

Two miles south is Valley View Golf Course. Looked like an easy walk so off I went. The first hill was down hill and then flat from 2 through 8. Most holes were tree lined and short, but the greens had a bad winter and need some work. They had done a nice job saving old trees with some carvings.

When I got to the 9th tee, I realized that a long par 5 uphill was the the only way out of the valley! Not only was it long but very steep up to the green. I stopped more than once to catch my breath!

Real Spring has returned

04/13/2015

Decided to re-visit a few places that were not open during the "January golf season". This time I was able to make phone contact with Fox Hollow in Sutton, York Country Club, Sandy Meadows in Waco, Elkhorn Valley in Hooper and both courses south of Fremont.

Arrived in Sutton at 11am Monday morning to a locked door. But I was not worried as the maintenance crews were working on the course. The course manager arrived a few minutes later. I mentioned that I was the guy who called him from the course in January and he gave me a complimentary round. I thanked him and headed to the first tee.

As you can see the fairways are very generous and large undulated greens were very receptive to iron shots. The 6th hole is one of the few 600 yard holes in the state.  It was an easy walk of gentle rolling hills.  Water hazards are in play on three of the holes.

Back to the road and a short drive to York Country Club.  It is a traditional tree lined country club with small round greens that are quite flat.  Most of the holes are crossed by a creek that meanders through the course.

My last stop of the day was a short drive east of York to exit 360 south of Waco. After seeing the very hilly layout from the clubhouse at Sandy Meadows, I decided that my legs have had a good workout and took a cart. A very short and hilly course with well placed hazards and table top small greens that demand accurate shots for par.
